LOW GWP ALTERNATIVE REFRIGERANT SELECTION CRITERIA AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

9th IIR Conference on Sustainability and the Cold Chain (ICCC 2026), İstanbul, Türkiye, 2026

The correct selection of refrigerants according to their application areas is a crucial matter of expertise. Today, issues such as the variety of refrigerant alternatives, their performance, environmental restrictions that vary by country, price, availability, etc. are prominent. In this context, confusion can arise among companies manufacturing in the refrigeration and air conditioning sectors. Furthermore, the purity and price of alternative refrigerants can vary depending on the technological infrastructure in the production countries. While impure refrigerants are inexpensive, they can reduce performance and damage compressors. The selection and performance evaluation of alternative refrigerants is a crucial issue, especially for companies producing in Turkey and exporting abroad. This study focuses on alternative refrigerant selection according to application areas and presents emerging long-term alternatives. The performance and application limitations of refrigerants selected according to application areas compared to existing refrigerants are theoretically evaluated. An Excel selection sheet has also been created to facilitate refrigerant selection.

CURRENT TRENDS IN THE AIR CONDITIONING AND REFRIGERATION INDUSTRY FROM A PRODUCTPORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVE

Technology Development Foundation of Türkiye (TTGV)
Compilation of The Experiences in Türkiye From The Product Management Perspective, 2022

Today’s business leaders are primarily focused on two comprehensive goals when developing new products. The primary goal is to increase business growth through investment in new products. This calls for increased revenues and profits brought on by a constant stream of new products. The second goal is to strengthen the company’s competitiveness both today and in the future through the development of new products (Marvin, 2005, p.46). Modern businesses need new products to succeed in the long run and compete with their competitors. Effective new product development processes have become a top strategic priority for businesses due to the circumstances brought on by rapidly evolving technology, market globalization, rising local and global competitiveness, and similar reasons (Cooper, Edgett & Kleinschmidt, 2001, p.1).

How businesses can manage their research and new product development resources in the most effective and efficient way in line with their goals is the most critical question in the new product development process. Finding a solution to this crucial question and enabling businesses to achieve
their corporate goals through the effective use and management of their resources in the new product process are the key goals of product portfolio management (Cooper et al., 2001, p.1).

Product portfolio management and its significance in the new product process are addressed in this study titled Current Trends in the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Industry from the Perspective of Product Portfolio Management. The study uses the air conditioning and refrigeration industry as an example industry, and current industrial trends that are believed to aid businesses in developing technology and product roadmaps during the portfolio planning process are provided in an effort to make the topic more concrete.

COLD ROOM HEAT LOAD CALCULATION AND COOLING EQUIPMENT SELECTION SOFTWARES (In Turkish Language)

20th National Thermal Science and Technology Congress (ULIBTK), Balikesir, Turkey, September 2015

The purpose of this paper is to give information about COLD ROOM CALCULATOR and COOLING UNIT SELECTOR softwares which calculate heat load of industrial cold rooms and provide selection of proper cooling equipments for cold rooms. The softwares, which are developed with web based architecture and modular programming approach, include modules of cold room heat load calculation, selections of cold room evaporators, air cooled condensers, monoblock refrigeration systems, split&industrial systems and central units. In addition, the softwares include some basic functions like model-based configuration and proposaling which supports commercial processes. Target market of the softwares are designer, manufacturing and sales companies which are working in HVAC&R industry. The softwares use approaches of American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and The Association of German Engineers (VDI) which are internationally recognized references.

Keywords: cooling unit selector, cold room load, cooling equipments, evaporator, condenser, monoblok, condensing unit, compressor unit, product selection software

R744 (CO2) COOLİNG SYSTEMS AND DESİGN PARAMETERS OF FİNNED TUBE TYPE R744 (CO2) EVAPORATOR AND GAS COOLERS

X. National HVAC and Sanitary Congress and Exhibition (TESKON 2011), Tepekule Convention Center, İzmir, Turkey, April 2011

R744 (CO2) was used in the early stages of the refrigeration industry, but it lost the competition with halocarbon refrigerants because of its high operating pressure and the loss of capacity and coefficient of performance when rejecting heat near or above the critical point. Because the negative effect of halocarbon refrigerants on environment, that R744 (CO2) started to used recently. New heat exchanger technology and system components allow R744 (CO2) to reach competitive efficiency levels for transcritic cycle especially in northern countries and for sub-critic cascade cycle in southern countries.

Recently, CO2 has been increasingly studied for application as the primary refrigerant in transcritical mobile air conditioners, vending machines, supermarkets, cold rooms, food production and process industry, industrial ice cream machineries and heat pumps.

This article is prepared to give general technical information on R744 (CO2) cooling systems, CO2 evaporators and gas coolers.

Keywords : CO2, R744, Transcritic CO2 Cycle, Subcritic CO2 Cycle, Gas Cooler, Natural Refrigerant
